In August of 1917, 5005 officers and men of the 8th Division (divisions were only Infantry at the time) were sent to Siberia to guard the Trans-Siberian Railroad.

The men of the 8th Division and the 27th and 31st Infantry regiments, sent from the Philippines, were authorized to wear the Polar Bear patch with the S for Siberia. The 27th and 31st subsequently incorporated the patch in their Regimental Crests
The American Expeditionary Force Siberia (AEFS) served in combat longer than any other World War I unit.
